Overview

Piano Removal explained — in plain English.

What it is

Removal and disposal of pianos — uprights, baby grands and grands — from any room of the property. We handle the lifting, manoeuvring, stair access and disposal under our SEPA-registered waste-carrier paperwork.

Who it's for

Families clearing a parent's home, downsizers, landlords resetting a let, homeowners replacing an old piano, and executors handling probate clearances where the piano is no longer wanted.

When you need it

Before a house sale or downsizing move, after a bereavement, during a renovation, or simply when a piano hasn't been played in years and is taking up space.

Why professional

Pianos commonly weigh 200–400kg (uprights) or 300–500kg+ (grands), with awkward weight distribution. Moving one without the right crew, straps and access plan risks back injuries, damaged floors and damaged door frames.

If you leave it

What it costs to put this off.

  • An old piano sitting unplayed against a damp outside wall warps and loses any resale value within a couple of years.
  • Leaving a piano in place during a house sale can put off buyers who can see they'll inherit the problem of moving it.
  • DIY piano moves are a leading cause of serious back and crush injuries — pianos are top-heavy and tip easily on stairs.

Common mistakes

The traps to avoid.

  • Trying to move a piano with two people and a sack barrow — they're too heavy and unbalanced for that.
  • Booking a general 'man with a van' who hasn't moved a piano before — wrong equipment, no straps, no access plan.
  • Assuming a charity will take any piano — most will only accept tuned, recently serviced uprights in good condition.

Our process

How a typical piano removal runs.

Same process every job — from your first call to the final tidy-up.

  1. 01

    Free site assessment

We visit (or review your photos) and, once we've seen the job in person, give you a clear, written, fixed-price quote — no hourly clock, no surprise disposal fees. Once it's in writing, the price won't change.

  2. 02

    Phone assessment

Tell us the type (upright, baby grand, grand), the room it's in, the floor, and the access — stairs, hallway widths, doorways. We confirm the price by phone.

  3. 03

    Access protection

On the day, we lay protection on floors, stair edges and door frames before we move the piano.

  4. 04

    Lift, move & dispose

Crew of two or more with straps and skates. Piano moved out carefully, loaded, and routed for licensed disposal.

  5. 05

    Final tidy & sign-off

Doors locked, keys returned, property left tidy. Where a property is being resold or re-let we can arrange cleaners to come in. SEPA waste transfer note available on request.

Benefits

What you actually get
when you book SK.

Heavy lifting handled

Trained crew, proper straps and a real access plan. You don't lift a thing.

Property protected

Floors, stair edges and door frames protected before the piano moves. We treat the property like it's still being lived in.

Uprights and grands

We handle both. Grands are dismantled into legs, lyre and case for safer carry where needed.

Fully insured

£5,000,000 public liability and £10,000 goods-in-transit — you're covered while the piano is in our care.

Licensed disposal

SEPA-registered carrier. Piano routed for responsible disposal — waste transfer note available on request.

In detail

Everything that falls under piano removal.

Pricing

Pricing for piano removal is confirmed by phone, because the cost depends on the type (upright vs grand), the room it's in, the floor and the access. Once we've talked it through, the price is fixed before we set off. Minimum uplift £45. Prices are a guide only — final quote confirmed on site or by phone.

Uprights

Standard upright pianos typically need a crew of two with straps and a skate. Stairs and tight hallways add time but are routine for us — tell us the floor and we'll plan the move on the call.

Grands and baby grands

Grands are usually dismantled in situ — legs, lyre and pedal lyre detached, lid closed and strapped, case moved on its side using a piano board. Slower and more careful than an upright, which is why we always quote these by phone after a short conversation about access.

What we can't do

We're not piano tuners or restorers, so we don't move pianos for re-installation in another home (a specialist piano mover is the right call there). What we do is the careful removal and licensed disposal of pianos that are no longer wanted.

How much does piano removal cost?+

Pricing is confirmed by phone based on the type of piano (upright vs grand), the room it's in, the floor and the access. Once we've talked it through, the price is fixed before we arrive. Minimum uplift £45.

Do you move uprights and grands?+

Yes — both. Grands are usually dismantled in situ for safer carry. Tell us the type when you call.

Can you collect from a top-floor flat?+

Yes, in most cases — stair width, landings and turns matter, so we'll talk through the access on the call before quoting.

Will you protect the floors and doorways?+

Yes — protection is laid before the piano moves. We treat the property like it's still being lived in.

Are you insured?+

Yes — £5,000,000 public liability and £10,000 goods-in-transit. Certificates available on request.

Do you re-home pianos or just dispose of them?+

Our service is removal and licensed disposal. We're not piano tuners or restorers, so for re-installation in another home a specialist piano mover is the right call.
