Overview

Man With a Van Hire explained — in plain English.

What it is

Man with a van hire is a van plus an experienced crew, booked for a specific job: collecting a purchase, shifting furniture between properties, moving a part load, or uplifting items for licensed disposal. You point, we lift, load, transport and — where it's waste — dispose of it properly.

Who it's for

People who've bought something bulky on Facebook Marketplace or at auction, students and tenants moving a room's worth of belongings, families helping a parent downsize, landlords moving furniture between lets, and small businesses shifting stock or equipment.

When you need it

Usually at short notice — a collection deadline, a moving date, an end-of-tenancy check, or a delivery the shop won't handle. Most man-with-a-van jobs across Ayrshire are booked and completed within a few days, and same-day uplift is often possible.

Why professional

Hiring a van yourself means fuel, deposit, insurance excess, a time limit and all the lifting on you — before you've found a second person to help carry a wardrobe down a stairwell. A van with a crew removes the lifting, the driving and the disposal problem in one booking.

If you leave it

What it costs to put this off.

  • Marketplace and auction collections come with deadlines — miss the window and the seller relists the item or the auction house charges storage.
  • Items left waiting for 'the next trip' end up sitting in a hallway or garden for weeks, taking damage from damp and getting in everyone's way.
  • A tenancy end date doesn't move. Anything still in the property on handover day usually gets charged back against the deposit.

Common mistakes

The traps to avoid.

  • Booking an unlicensed van for anything that's actually waste — if it's fly-tipped, the fine lands on you as the householder, not on the driver.
  • Hiring a self-drive van without checking the load height, the stairwell or who's carrying the heavy end.
  • Paying by the hour, then watching the clock run while traffic, parking and a locked communal door do their worst.

Our process

How a typical man with a van hire runs.

Same process every job — from your first call to the final tidy-up.

  1. 01

    Free site assessment

We visit (or review your photos) and, once we've seen the job in person, give you a clear, written, fixed-price quote — no hourly clock, no surprise disposal fees. Once it's in writing, the price won't change.

  2. 02

    Tell us the job

Photos or a quick description: what's moving, from where to where, which floor, and whether there's parking. We quote a fixed price on that — from £45 for a single item, up to £495 for a full 3.5t van load.

  3. 03

    Van and crew arrive

We turn up with blankets, straps and trolleys. Floors and door frames protected where furniture has to come through a tight hallway or stairwell.

  4. 04

    Load, transport, unload

We do the lifting at both ends. If the load is waste rather than a move, it goes to a licensed facility instead — waste transfer note available on request.

  5. 05

    Final tidy & sign-off

Doors locked, keys returned, property left tidy. Where a property is being resold or re-let we can arrange cleaners to come in. SEPA waste transfer note available on request.

Benefits

What you actually get
when you book SK.

You don't lift a thing

Crew, trolleys, straps and blankets come as standard. Wardrobes, washing machines, mattresses and flat-pack all handled.

Fixed price, not an hourly clock

The price is agreed before we set off and it doesn't change because traffic was bad or the stairs were tight.

Single items to full van loads

From £45 for one item, £150 quarter van, £250 half van, £495 full 3.5t van. Minimum uplift £45.

Fully insured

£5,000,000 public liability and £10,000 goods-in-transit, so your belongings are covered while they're in our care.

Licensed for waste too

SEPA registered waste carrier (WCR/R/1137430). If part of the load is rubbish, it's disposed of properly rather than left with you.

In detail

Everything that falls under man with a van hire.

What man with a van hire actually covers

The phrase covers a lot of ground, so it's worth being clear. Our man-with-a-van service is a van and crew hired for a defined job rather than a full household move. That includes collecting a sofa, bed, appliance or garden furniture you've bought second-hand; shifting a few rooms' worth of belongings between two addresses; taking a part load to storage; delivering items to a family member across Ayrshire; and uplifting unwanted furniture or general waste for licensed disposal. Because we're a clearance company first, we're comfortable with the awkward end of the job — the wardrobe that won't come apart, the corner sofa that has to go out through a window, the washing machine on a second-floor landing.

Pricing

Man with a van hire is priced by the size of the load and the work involved, not by the hour. Single items start at £45, which is also our minimum uplift. A quarter van is £150, a half van £250, and a full 3.5t van load £495 — roughly the equivalent of two builders' skips. Small moves are quoted per job once we know how much is going, how far it's travelling and what the access looks like at both ends. Prices are a guide only; the final quote is confirmed on site or by phone, and once it's confirmed it doesn't change. There's no hourly clock, no fuel surcharge and no separate disposal fee bolted on at the end.

Access, stairs and parking

Access is the single biggest factor in how a job runs, which is why we ask about it up front. Tell us the floor, whether there's a lift, how wide the stairwell turns are, and whether the van can get within carrying distance. Tenements and top-floor flats across Largs, Ayr, Kilmarnock and Irvine are routine work for us — we plan the carry before we arrive rather than discovering the problem with a fridge halfway up the stairs. Where a permit or a reserved bay is needed, let us know and we'll work around it. If something genuinely can't come out of the room in one piece, we'll dismantle it in situ and take the parts.

Moving versus disposing

Half of the calls we get are a mix of both: some of it is going with you, some of it is going in the van for good. That's fine — we sort it on the day and nothing leaves until you've seen it. Anything being kept is blanket-wrapped and strapped for transport. Anything being disposed of is separated for recycling where we can, with upholstered furniture kept apart and handled in line with SEPA's POPs guidance. That means one booking, one crew and one price instead of a removal firm and a waste carrier turning up on different days.

What we don't do

We're straight about the limits. We're not a piano specialist for re-installation in another home, we don't handle full multi-property commercial relocations with crated IT and we don't offer packing services, insurance-valued antiques transport or long-distance overnight runs. What we do is local, practical van-and-crew work across Ayrshire and the Clyde coast — single items, part loads, small moves and uplifts, done by people who lift furniture for a living.

Areas we cover

Based in Largs and working across the whole of Ayrshire and the Clyde coast: Largs, Skelmorlie, Wemyss Bay, Fairlie, West Kilbride, Millport and Arran; Ardrossan, Saltcoats, Stevenston, Kilwinning, Irvine, Dreghorn and Springside; Dalry, Beith and Kilbirnie; Kilmarnock, Crosshouse, Kilmaurs and Stewarton; and Ayr, Prestwick, Troon and Dundonald. If you're just outside that, call anyway — if we're passing, we'll usually still do it.

POPs-Compliant, Responsible Disposal

We follow SEPA's POPs guidance for upholstered furniture and recycle responsibly at licensed facilities. We're a SEPA registered waste carrier (WCR/R/1137430), with a Waste Transfer Note available on request.
